The Three Pillars of Observability
Observability is about understanding what your system is doing without having to deploy new code.
The Three Pillars
- Logs: discrete events with timestamps. “User 42 requested /checkout at 14:03:02.”
- Metrics: aggregated measurements over time. Request rate, error rate, latency percentiles.
- Traces: end-to-end request paths across services. “Request 5a3f took 340ms: 50ms in auth, 200ms in database, 90ms in frontend.”
Each pillar answers different questions. You need all three to debug production issues efficiently.
Start with structured logging (JSON). Add metrics for your four golden signals. Add tracing when you hit your first cross-service bug.
